Some helpful advice
The Invisible Thread Reel is a dispensing device for Invisible Thread. Invisible thread, although not completely Invisible is a very fine strand of Nylon that is used by Magicians to levitate small objects. What is so revolutionary about the Thread Reel is that it is the first device to not only dispense Invisible Thread, but also retracts it, and it keeps a constant tension on the line. Using Invisible Thread prior to this device was a nightmare. You had to strip the thread out of a bundle of strands, set it up before the performance, and if you were lucky it would still be intact when you were ready to present the effect.
The Thread Reel has many advantages compared to just using ordinary Invisible Thread. Be sure when you learn the effects to understand that you will be developing skills that you will be able to apply to your own idea's etc. It is the techniques and theory you are after here so that you will be in a position to create your own routines etc.
In November 1989
something happened that would soon change the magic world. A fellow named
James George discovered a New Invisible Thread that was much stronger then other
Invisible Threads that were currently being sold by the Magic Shops. It
was a 32 strand synthetic nylon that was amazingly strong for it size. While
James had the idea for the Invisible Thread Reel since he was a freshman in High
School, he did not have the thread that would be required for the Reel to work.
Once the thread was discovered the rest was History!
This Thread was
so strong, in fact, that just one of its thirty two strands was capable of
supporting over two ounces. This feat is made more impressive by the fact that
one strand is impossibly tiny and, under most conditions, completely invisible.
The new thread gave James several wonderful ideas. Imagine, the classic
invisible thread levitation with newer and much heavier items: Pencils, finger
rings, soda cans, the endless stream of items was only limited by our
imagination. But we hadn't seen anything yet.
Two and a half
years later, after long hours of tired eyes, fried brains, and frayed nerves,
James astounded me once again. The advent of the "super strong' thread
enabled James to wind an individual strand on a spool that was anchored to a
loop of elastic. This elastic was also a missing puzzle piece in the
search for material to create the first ITR. While playing with a book and
elastic from David Britland in England James had discovered the Material that
would make the Reel a reality. This material was Spandex and had amazing
properties that would be required in order for the Thread Reel to work.
The principle idea behind the Reel is the same as a wind up toy!
James had $15.00
in his pocket and took a trip to Tap Plastics and bought some acrylic tubing to
house the assembly into. It was about 11:00pm and after working really hard to
figure out a way to make the thing silent and also to smooth the hole so it
didn't cut the thread, the first ITR was born. It was very exciting and I
couldn't sleep that night, the very first one I built worked perfectly and looks
almost exactly like the standard ITR that we still manufacture this day.
It was a very exciting time! I didn't realize how hot this thing would be, I
couldn't build them fast enough. Soon I had the whole family and all my friends
helping out. We put in long hours and made sure every order went out the
next day, it was an amazing amount of work. Remember that we had to hand
strip each thread for every thread reel that was made. It wasn't until my
neighbor from across the street John Ivine had played with many different idea's
for a thread stripping machine. We finally had a break through that
allowed us to strip out larger volumes of Invisible thread in a very short
period of time. The machine it self was far more complicated then the ITR
and was really the bigger invention of the two. I must also give credit to
Malcolm and Tutako Folmar for the amazing amount of dedicated work that they put
into the Invisible Thread Reels, without them we would have had 10 times the
amount of customer service issues. They still manufacture the original ITR's and
the quality is still hard to beat! The two of them have manufactured well over
100,000 units.
Many of us that
had prototype ITR's would have a series of revelations. As we pushed the
limits of the ITR we found it made free floating borrowed objects easier then
performing the Ball Vase. By pinning the ITR behind our breast pockets we
could feed the thread between buttons to the outside of our shirts. Because the
ITR feeds its thread so silently and smoothly we were able to anchor anywhere,
without fear of breaking or tangling the line. The greatest advantage, however
has been the freedom of movement. The ITR enabled us to move away from the
anchor in any direction we wanted, and to extreme distances. The rewind action
naturally allowed us to close the distance to the anchor at any speed we wanted.
The ITR proved to be quite quick. This freedom of movement would banish
any thought of "Thread work" from even the most experienced minds.
My purpose in
writing this collection of routines is to enlighten you on the versatility of
your ITR. Remember that the routine performed is only as good as the
individual performing it. Although the ITR makes magic easy, time should be
taken for the careful practice of each routine to ensure an enchanting and
magical experience for the spectator.
You will have
noticed that the reel comes in many different sizes, the reason why is that each
was designed with a particular type of performer in mind and also for individual
properties that are enabled to that reel because of the size. As a general
rule, the longer the tube, the longer the distance you get out of the reel.
The more tension on the elastic the less distance you get out of the reel. The
property that was most important to me was particular to the Floating Dollar
Effect. I wanted to move towards the bill and have it maintain it's position in
space. The smaller models of reels are more designed for close-up work,
were the distance out of the reel is not such an issue. The stage reel being the
longest offers about 35 feet of distance out of the reel, allowing you to
perform the floating bill in the middle of a room with no walls near you. You
can also anchor right to te ground in the middle of the outdoors and perform the
floating bill in what appears to be an impossible situation even if you had a
thread.
The tension
increases the more you pull the thread out of the reel. Eventually you will get
to the point were the elastic over powers the thread and causes it to snap. You
can put more tension on the reel by winding more thread into the wax ball. Do
not try to put additional winds on the elastic as it will be to difficult and
cumbersome. You will notice that some tricks require very light tension
and others a greater amount of tension. We have different refills available for
different models that will certainly meet the needs that you may have. We also
have a finer invisible thread but bear in mind that the distance is naturally
reduced as the breaking point in the thread will come much faster.
Bare in mind
that this is part of the learning curve and that you will tend to break the
thread more often as your body is still learning were the breaking point is with
the thread. With effort and time on your part, you will get to the point were
you know exactly how much tension the thread can take. The most common reason
beginners break the thread is they forget that the thread can't reel out of the
wax ball. To avoid this error, be pushing away from your self as you load
an object on the line such as a bill etc. It is always best to have a
back up ITR pinned in your clothing as even the most experienced ITR worker may
break a thread during a performance. This will allow you to anchor the
second wax ball and immediately continue were you left off in the performance
and baffling the audience that much more!
You want an
object that is light enough as to not sag too much on the line. It is best
to stick with items that you can move towards and have them maintain their
position in space. This is why a dollar bill is so popular, since not only
can you move towards it, you can also borrow it very easily. Finger rings are
my second favorite choice and the enclosed routine is worth it's weight in gold!
The other thought is objects that look extremely heavy but are actually quite
light. For example an empty coke can. One of the greatest benefits of the Thread
Reel is the fact that by walking away from the floating object that you are
transferring energy into the reel. This energy can now be utilized to cause the
bill to float from the floor back up to your hand. As you will read about in the
floating bill routine. This motion of the floating object, while you remain
completely stationary is ery difficult to explain. It really creates the
illusion of levitation.
What about the lights!
Lighting is a critical issue when considering performance of thread magic. What you wear and where is the light source coming from are the two biggest factors to take note of upon consideration of using the reel. The best lighting I have found is outdoors on a cloudy day. When in this environment it is close to impossible to see the thread. The worst conditions is to have direct light coming from behind you. The light bounces off the thread right into the spectators eyes.
More often it is logic that has them blurting out that its thread not because they actually see it! What is more important that you be conscience of is the fact that your body language and actions tell them it is a thread. You need to get to the place where you can perform the routine without even thinking about the thread. Just like the thumb-tip or any other magic move. If your mind has to think about it, then your actions tell the audience exactly what you are concentrating on. You must practice this until you can completely forget about the string and not have any concern for it. This is what takes so much time.
Most people will never get to this point as they will be too quick to blame the fact that people can see the string not realizing that it is their actions that tell the audience it is a string. I don't know how many times I have been told in the performance of the vanishing scarf "I saw a guy do that trick, but he used a rubber thumb. I tell em that I used to do it that way, but people know that one. " Of course I am using a rubber thumb! My handling is what convinces them that it can't be a thumb.
Your handling
is what will convince them it is not a string. Fortunately the nature of the
thread reel makes this far easier then ever. I would not recommend performing
the reel for anyone until you have put in a good solid two weeks of practice and
critical thinking about your moves and routine. Keep it short sweet and simple
and you will blow them away. It is definitely a case of less is more. The
temptation on your part will be to continue to want to show it to people, but
maintaining self control will be well worth it! Michael Ammar has great things
to say about this thinking. After you have blown them away remember you only
can lose if you do it again.
